Gorham has a great volunteer program with over 800 active volunteers. However, there seems to be a decline in parent and community volunteers once kids reach middle school and high school.
Currently, Gorham has 190 registered volunteers for the middle school and high school combined. The hope is to increase the number of parents and community members who get involved and encourage more volunteers to share their skills with this older group of kids.
Research has shown that parental involvement through the years leads to higher academic performance, improved school attendance, better homework skills, and an increased likelihood of graduation.
To get involved in the Gorham school volunteer program, one must attend a one-time volunteer orientation. Twelve orientations are held each school year; three mornings at the start of the year and nine evening orientations during the remainder of the year. Parent volunteers must also register each year on the school website for each child in the school system.
