Walking into the gym for the Gorham Unified Basketball game against Bonny Eagle on February 6, the stands were full of fans from both sides. As the players took the floor for warm ups, there were high fives and hugs among the players and cheers from the stands. There was an undeniable energy from the crowd.
Last year, GHS seniors Courtney Brent and Tom Nelson approached Community Based Education Teacher, Eric Lelansky, and Athletic Director, Tim Spear, with the idea of starting a team in Gorham. They had heard about the Unified program’s success in other schools and wanted to bring it to Gorham.
A unified team allows student athletes with developmental disabilities to experience what it’s like to play alongside non-varsity partners without developmental disabilities. Coach Eric Lelansky said, “The kids on the team seem to really enjoy the opportunity to compete and be part of the camaraderie that comes along with being part of a team.”
Brent said, “Ever since Tom and I created the Unified team at GHS, I’ve grown relationships with people that I never would have expected to. I’ve gained an awareness of other people’s situations and I’m so grateful for that. I’m lucky to have gotten the opportunity to be a part of a team as special as this one.”
Nelson added, “I was excited to help get the Unified program established because it’s important to give these athletes a chance to show their skills on the court and to create friendships within our community. I’ve watched the players grow both on and off the court. Watching them grow in their confidence and their game is definitely the most rewarding experience. I am very thankful to have met such awesome people.”
Returning student athletes, Evan Morrell, Brian Edwards, Andrea Thibeault and River Cummings all had a passion for the game before having the opportunity to play in the Unified League, each bringing their own style and tenacity to the team. New players this year include Niko Gagne, Brice Lyon, and Michaela Taiani.
As the lone senior student athlete, Evan Morrell took the floor for the first time during the game, cooly went down the court, and made his first shot of the game for three points. According to Morrell, that’s one of his favorite things, and the crowd went wild.
“Evan is definitely one of the leaders of our team. He is extremely enthusiastic and always looks for ways to improve and help the team,” Lelansky said. He also shared that Evan’s passion and intensity for the game is fun to watch.
Morrell has enjoyed his time on the Unified Basketball team; he is also manager for the girls’ varsity basketball team. He shared, “I will miss being on the court with my team and all the laughs.” He said he will also miss meeting new friends from other schools.
After graduation, Morrell looks forward to continuing his work at Gorham House Nursing Home and possibly working at Job Corps or in the cafeteria at Maine Medical Center.
While one of its leaders will move on, the Unified team will continue to grow and new leaders will emerge. “The Unified team has positively impacted the entire culture at GHS. The athletes are constantly receiving positive feedback and attention during the school day and it has really made them feel great,” said Lelansky.
