The idea for a Gorham newspaper came about in late 1993. Maynard Charron spent most of 1994 pitching the concept to various groups and organizations in town, including the high school.
“I thought students could do the bulk of the reporting with the help of several adult mentors.” Then Maynard added, “To say the least, that idea did not take hold.”
“In late 1994 a meeting was called and about 15 people attended. It was like serendipity! Once an organizational chart was created thanks to Ginny Cross, who became our layout publisher, everyone there stepped into a role that fit them perfectly.”
“Althea Masterson was our first Editor. Sheri Faber handled lots of town news and the ever popular blotter. Chris Crawford managed all sorts of fun and compelling feature articles. What a wonderful example of community involvement and support. ”
The first Gorham Times was mailed to everyone in Gorham September 1995. Maynard says it was pretty rough and with poor print quality, and that the paper has come a long way. From typewriters and fax machines, land
line phoning and rolls of Kodak film, the Times has embraced all of today’s technology to help produce a high quality, informative Gorham newspaper.
What an accomplishment, 30 years, from several hundred people who just wanted to be part of “Bringing The News To All Of Gorham.”
