The Bookworm, located at 42 Main Street, celebrated its 30th anniversary on June 1 with face painting, popcorn, games, raffle prizes, cake, and food from Brian’s BBQ Grill food truck.
For Gorham resident Helene Adams, the Bookworm has been a cherished part of her life since she moved to town in 2005. “At first, I came to the Bookworm to get book recommendations. However, I’ve formed wonderful friendships during my visits to the store and always come back for inspiration, books, and gifts.”

Partygoers came to celebrate the store’s birthday from near and far. “My baby first crawled in the bookstore; I wasn’t going to miss this celebration,” reminisces Bethany, from Connecticut. “I have so many fond memories of the Bookworm. I remember when it first opened.”
For Ruth Degraphenried, the Bookworm is an essential part of the community. “We’re all friends here. The town of Gorham supports us; the residents support us and want us to be here. We understand that you can get books cheaper or faster online, but there’s something special about the Bookworm. Our kids grew up here.”
The Bookworm opened in 1989 and specializes in new and used books, cards, and pottery and unique gifts. Owner Marianne Cianciolo and her staff are always available to provide book recommendations, special order a book, and provide excellent customer service.
