“Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen [and Gorham Times delivery person!] from their appointed rounds”
Yes, the postal service motto even applies to GT delivery person Scott Burnheimer. Retiring from his route just a few weeks ago, Scott and the entire Burnheimer family, daughter Sarah, sons John, Eric and Ryan and wife Julie, have been with the GT from the first edition, September 1995, 27 years of delivering over 400 papers every other week to various businesses in south Gorham.
It started with Julie, the consummate Gorham cheerleader and volunteer.
When the GT was forming, it needed all types of volunteers. Distributing the paper every other week on a specific route was critical. Julie did not hesitate when asked to help out and said “I would love to drive around town and drop off the GT! When do I start?”
Julie faithfully fulfilled this task just as she did many other volunteer acts of kindness for many of Gorham’s young people and citizens of all ages. On the days she had a conflict or illness, she made sure one of the family members took over the route. Never did she fail to get the job done.
We can’t resist retelling the story of Julie’s dedication and love for sports and for her family. Julie was very pregnant. A Little League practice for oldest son Ryan was on a Wednesday afternoon. Julie was there as she was for EVERY practice and game. That evening Sarah was born. The next day at 4 o’clock, just in time for the game, there was Julie with baby Sarah wrapped in a blanket, the two of them cheering on Ryan and his Lions teammates. Just another family day for Julie!
Tragically when Julie passed away in 2014, Scott did not hesitate to carry on the family tradition. He had recently retired as Warden of the Maine Correctional Center, but certainly had plenty on his plate to deal with. He kept the GT route, fitting it around many rounds of golf in Gorham, throughout the USA and even Scotland.
27 years is a long time to get in and out of a car to drop off newspapers. The Burnheimer’s never thought it a burden or a chore. Just another way to support Gorham, a town they all love and a town that certainly loves them back.
Thank you, Scott. You certainly delivered well.
