The elementary program for English Language Learners (ELLs) in Gorham recently received a generous $250 grant from the Gorham Educational Foundation for the purchase of diverse children’s literature featuring multilingual families and world cultures. As Gorham continues to grow and become increasingly diverse, it is important that all children see themselves in the pages of Gorham’s books. By creating a library featuring diverse characters, the goal is to enrich the lives of all students and prepare them for lives as global citizens. This mini-library will travel among the three elementary schools and act as a resource and teaching tool for introducing topics such as cultural and linguistic diversity. Gorham’s elementary ELL population has doubled in the past five years, with over 80 students throughout Gorham’s five schools at present time. Gorham students and their families speak over 20 languages and hail from many parts of the world.
