BASEBALL:
Gorham Baseball ended its season with a 4-0 loss in the first round of the baseball playoffs. Coach Chuck Nadeau shared the team graduated nine seniors: Trevor Gray, Trevor Loubier, Jacob Sladen, Joey Curesky, Brandon Cummings, Zach Green, Bryce Womack, Aaron Goschke and Kevin Mollison. Aaron Goschke was named an Honorable Mention All-Conference pick for his great work as a pitcher and outfielder.
SOFTBALL:
Gorham Softball ended up 6-10 and in 13th place.Unfortunately the girls were just one place away from making the playoffs. Coach Renee Whipkey said, “On a positive note, we did finish with a strong game on our Senior Night vs. Kennebunk, and we won 4-3 in eight innings.”
BOYS LACROSSE:
Coach Clayton Jones shared that the boys were not only doing their part on the field, they were thriving off the field helping the Gorham Village Alliance with a clean up day and volunteering with Gorham Youth Lacrosse.
At the end the season, the boys looked to avenge last year’s loss to Windham. Played on a rainy, miserable night, the Rams were down by nine goals at one point with a score of 11-2. “Then, in a comeback for the ages, the Rams came roaring back to tie the game at 14! Our motto this year, in Latin, was ‘Numquam Dedite!’ meaning Never Surrender!” Jones said. While Windham won the game 15-14, the Rams overcame many obstacles.
The boys ended the regular season with a great win against Kennebunk 11-7 and headed into the playoffs at 8-4, a vast improvement over last year.
A rematch against South Portland in the playoffs looked to be a tough draw, but it was to be a different story this time around. No longer playing to lose, and knowing they were capable of more, this time the Rams hung in there. With a score of 11-9 the game was still within reach and the Rams scored with 10 seconds left to pull within one. Despite a game ending opportunity to score, the Rams succumbed to the Red Riots. Jones said though things didn’t go their way, they played right to the end.
Both Dupuis and standout goalie Giuseppe Brown were named to the SMAA All-Conference Team. Jones said two-year captains Ben Nault and Dupuis deserve a lot of credit for their leadership. “They really helped keep everyone on the right track and pulling together,” Jones said.
GIRLS LACROSSE:
The Rams made it to the second round of playoffs this year, beating Noble 17-1 in the first round. Mary DeWitt, Carson Battaglia and Sophie Kaufman each scored three times and Hailey Morrill, Jill Nichols and Hallie Shiers each scored twice. Mackenzie Dix and Maddy Sweatt scored the other goals.
The girls fell to Massabesic 7-6 in the second round with Morrill scoring three goals and Dewitt, Battaglia and Shiers each scoring one. Coach Mary Guimond said, “The girls played phenomenally, and gave their last game everything they had. We will miss the seniors, but have a great group of underclassmen ready to take us deep into playoffs for the foreseeable future. Keep an eye on this rising sophomore class!”
Seniors Hailey Morrill and Sarah Walker, as well as junior Carson Battaglia, all received second-team all-conference recognition, and Paige Hume and Hallie Shiers were named to the honorable mention team.
GIRLS TRACK:
The GHS girls track & field team had a tremendous season. Coach John Caterina said, “The Rams finished the regular season with their one and only loss to perennial power Thornton Academy.” The SMAA championship came down to the final events before Gorham finished as runner-up to Cheverus by only 1.67 points.
The state meet was won by an impressive Cheverus team but the runner-up position was, again, a close battle between Gorham and T.A. with Gorham edging out T.A by less than three points for the 2nd place trophy.
Caterina said the team was led by its captains Avery Germond (Sr), Evelyn Kitchen (Sr), Iris Kitchen (Jr), Kate Tugman (Jr) and Abby O’Brien (Jr) and there were some incredible performances by underclasswomen throughout the season.
New records were set by Kate Tugman in the 3200 and freshman Sydney Connolly in the 100. The 4 X 100 relay team of Maddie Michaud (Fr), Nevaeh Moore (Soph), Emma Green (Fr) and Connolly were State Class A champions and also set a new school record.
GIRLS TENNIS:
The girls tennis record, including playoffs, was 8-5. The Rams lost in the Western Maine semi-finals to Falmouth 1-4, with the the only win by Jocelyn Bolt at #1 singles.
