Gorham residents over 65 years old may apply for property tax assistance by completing a form available at the Town Clerk’s office and returning it by the August 1 deadline. An ordinance passed by the Town Council has made available $50,000 to be allocated to qualifying seniors this year.

To qualify, seniors must meet the following criteria: be at least 65 years old, have lived in the home as an owner or renter for the past year, have been a resident of Gorham for at least five years, and have household income that does not exceed qualifying limits. Taxes on the property must be current.

The application must list all income from all members of the household. For one person the limit is $56,790, for two people $64,890, three people $72,990, and $81,090 for four. The application details what qualifies as income and includes social security benefits even if they are not taxable.

Applicants must attach copies of their 2017 tax filling, or if they do not file taxes, other forms that document income. There can only be one application per household.

In addition to tax filings, applicants must include a copy of one form of identification, such as a driver’s license, Maine State I.D., or passport. Applicants who are renters must attach a copy of their lease to the application as well.

Seniors who have questions or need assistance completing the application should call 222-1656 or email seniorrebate@gorham.me.us to schedule an appointment.

Application does not guarantee a rebate. Benefits will range from $200 to $500 with applicants with lower income receiving the most relief. Decisions on eligibility and benefits will be made by the Town Clerk’s office and are final, but may be appealed to the Town Council.

The application can be printed from the Town of Gorham website and must be returned to the Clerk’s office by August 1, 2018. The Senior Property Tax Property Tax Assistance Ordinance can be read online by clicking on Ordinances on the website.
