The Rams’ field Hockey team, one of the top teams in the region, has had an October to remember. The Rams started the month off with a 3-0 victory over Noble and then lost two-back to-back “too close for comfort” games, one against Cheverus (the reigning Class A state champion), that went into double overtime and the other against a very good Biddeford team; both games had a state championship vibe with all the hype, especially against Cheverus. That match-up pushed athletes on both teams to the limit both physically and mentally.

The first half of the game went scoreless and then went back and forth, scoreless into the fourth quarter sending the game into “sudden overtime.” The hometown Rams played tough all the way through and stayed with the Stags giving them their toughest game of the season. Junior Joey Pompeo who once played for the Gorham Middle School team, was an integral player on the other side as she was credited for the assist in the Stags double overtime goal. The Rams Madison Tibbals had 11 saves and had phenomenal stops. Coach Becky Manson reiterated, “games like these will, no doubt, prepare us for the post season. It was a good test for us at the right time.” The Rams went on to win 5 straight games; with Annie Collier, Reece Leclerc, Abby Chamberlain, and Sydney Quimby taking care of the offense.

Other highlights on the field include big wins for both the Girls’ and Boys’ soccer teams.

The Girls’ team, after defeating Cheverus, is back at the top of the Class A heal point standings. To recap; the season began with a 1-1 tie v. Scarborough and then four straight wins. After a wild loss to Windham (4-3), the Rams continued on a five game win streak.

The Cheverus game was a tough match up at the Stags home field on a very brisk, windy day. Ashley Connolly gave the Rams a spark late in the first half with a blast from 30 yards out and then the deciding goal on a corner kick from Logan Doughty to secure the win. This gives Gorham a boost, but not without its challenges. The Rams have lost key players due to injury; their starting goalkeeper Sawyer VonderHaar (who was clutch for the Rams to get to the regional finals last year) and senior captain Sarah Rosingana (during the Cheverus game).

On the boys side; the team had a key victory against Deering and improved to 8-4 on the season. Owen Spera had two goals and Zach Chandler had a goal to take care of the offense, while the Rams defense got the shutout.

The Varsity Girls Volleyball team (Class A state champion titleholder) is currently 9-4 in the regular season and in first with a 7-0 record in the region. The golf team impressed on a tough day of weather to qualify for states the weekend of Oct. 11.

Look out for the Rams in postseason action. It is anyone’s game in a string of tight games, especially when playoffs begin. The Field Hockey and Girls’ Soccer teams respectively have ten seniors apiece who will not go down without a fight.
