Village Elementary School kicked off its One School, One Book on Monday, April 24. El Deafo, written by Cece Bell, was selected by school librarian Gigi McAllister. Mrs. McAllister wanted to pick a book aligned with Gorham School District’s focus on DEI (Diversity Equity Inclusion) and that engaged a range of ages.
This graphic novel is playful but also allows conversations about people with disabilities. Students learned that their differences are their superpowers—some students who are hard of hearing shared their experiences.
Village School had a full school assembly to kick off the book. Special guest Robert Gillies, from Baxter School of the Deaf, taught students American Sign Language. Students and staff learned how to sign “good morning” or “hello.”
Mr. Gillies emphasized being a good communicator by using a smile or eye contact with others. El Deafo is a book that all students, staff, and bus drivers can share and discuss to build empathy and compassion within the school community.
