Soccer and field hockey senior night

October is National High School Athletics and Activities Month, so it was fitting that Oct. 6 kicked off homecoming weekend for the Rams. Prior to the GHS football game against Biddeford that night, the sports program took a moment to honor the senior athletes as well as their parents.

As is the custom, for most of the Rams programs, the athletes received a flower from their coach and in turn presented it to their parents. It’s a token gesture for the countless hours they transported them to and from practice, for hosting team dinners, and hours of watching games. The Rams went on to get the win with a 19-0 victory. The night ended with a fantastic fireworks display, sponsored by the Gorham Athletic Boosters by generous donations from local businesses (Junction Bowl, On Point Self Storage and LM Appraisals).

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and several Rams teams raised funds in an effort to support families fighting breast cancer. The girls volleyball and soccer programs got creative.

On Oct. 12, the volleyball team hosted a “Dig Pink” night and got the win over Thornton Academy. The girls soccer team’s fundraising efforts included a Patriots ticket raffle for the Monday, Dec.18 game v. the Kansas City Chiefs. The winner was announced at the home game v. Kennebunk. Congratulations to Robb Gossen, the winner of the tickets. The Rams went on to win 6-1; Julia Reed scored 4 goals with Piper Forgues adding a goal and an assist.

Friday, Oct. 13 was an especially busy one for the Rams. It was senior night for the girls soccer team. Kudos to the junior parents for organizing this special event. Their game went into 2 OT’s and settled for a 1-1 tie with Falmouth. Bailey Hatch had a great goal assisted by Caitlin Nichols. The football team traveled to Portland and won their 2nd in a row, beating Deering 20-0. The field hockey team had big marginal wins and ended their regular season with a record of 13-1. Boys soccer (12-1-1) hosted rival Scarborough on Oct. 17 for their season finale with a great victory 4-1. Jack Luciano and JT Morrell scored the winning goals, while goalkeeper Ethan Homa had another strong game in goal with crucial saves.

The third week of October concludes the regular season games for all the fall teams (excluding football). Most teams will get a “bye” week (with their top 4 seed), automatically advancing to the next round, while opponents will start their play-off bids on Saturday, Oct. 21.

GHS athletic director Tim Spear stated, “our volleyball team is going in as #1, and both field hockey and boys and girls soccer teams should go in as the #2 seed in the MPA playoffs.” The cross-country team will compete in the regionals at Twin Brook in Cumberland. This meet is especially important for senior captain Cruise Labrie who was in a serious go-karting accident last May. He has since worked super hard to come back and compete with the support of his parents/doctors, coaches and teammates.
