At the end of December, in an email to members, the owners of The Gorham Country Club announced the decision to close the club. Owners, Harold and Kathy Hawkes have made the decision to retire.
“The last two years with the pandemic have been a challenge for us all. The uncertainty of whether or not we were going to be allowed to open led to operating under all new guidelines which were challenging for everyone… This has given us reason to pause and reevaluate our business,” they said.
Also mentioned in the email to members is that the proposed Turnpike Spur will possibly affect some of the holes of the course.
Known as “Maine’s Friendliest Golf Course,” the 180-acre course at 93 McLellan Rd has been a gem of the Gorham community for nearly 60 years. Decades of memories made on the grounds at various events shine a spotlight on the legacy the Hawkes have built.
