Gorham Police received a call from the Gorham Country Club reporting that a piece of landing gear had landed on the seventh fairway at the golf course. The pilot of a Piper Navajo twin-engined aircraft was planning to land in Portland but flew back to New York after he learned the landing gear had fallen off. The pilot wanted to burn off as much fuel as possible as he was expecting to make a crash landing. The pilot safely managed to make a belly landing in Islip, New York. Sgt. Ted Hatch recovered the wheel which weighed about 100 pounds.
