Gorham Lady Ram’s standout Mackenzie Holmes capped her senior year with the honor of being named Gatorade Maine Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Holmes as Maine’s best high school girls basketball player.
Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March, Holmes joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports.
The 6-foot-2 senior center led the Rams to a 13-7 record and the Class AA regional semifinals this past season. Holmes averaged 30.1 points, 16.7 rebounds, 3.9 blocks and 2.3 steals per game, and converted 63.1 percent of her field goal attempts.
The three time Southwestern Maine Activities Association Player of the Year, she is also a three-time All-State honoree and is ranked as the nation’s No. 53 recruit in the Class of 2019 by ESPN.
Holmes maintained an A average in the classroom and has volunteered locally on behalf of Ronald McDonald House Charities and youth basketball programs. She will attend Indiana University this fall.
