Seniors Emily Crepeau and Lydia Valentine were awarded the Gorham Times Scholarships this year. Both volunteered their time as student writers for the Gorham Times.
Crepeau interned for the paper for one year and quickly became a valuable asset to the staff. She routinely attended production meetings and was willing to step up and cover many topics at the high school.
“Emily was always willing to take on an article, ask clarifying questions, and work to improve on her AP style of writing throughout the year. We enjoyed her presence at our production meetings. She was an excellent voice for her fellow classmates and had a great handle on what was happening at GHS. We will certainly miss her and wish her all the best,” said Andrea Morrell, School News Editor.
Lydia Valentine began interning for the paper during her eighth-grade year at Gorham Middle School and continued throughout her four years of high school. Valentine wrote numerous articles during her time as an intern. She was a great liaison between the schools and the paper; always a dependable, hard-working member of our team.
“Lydia was my go-to intern for the past five years. Her passion for the arts and activities at school led by students always came through in her writing. She often came to me with an idea for an article to write based on events happening at school. I could ask her for a last-minute favor to cover an event and she always jumped on the chance. Her enthusiasm, hardwork, dedication to deadlines, and easy-going personality made her an excellent intern. We will all miss her greatly and wish her the best of luck in her next chapter,” said Morrell.
The Martha T. Harris Memorial Scholarship was presented to Lydia Drew. Harris, a life-long Gorham resident, as well as a founding member of the Gorham Times, died unexpectedly in 2013 from complications during chemotherapy.
When speaking about Drew, Harris’ daughter, Jennifer Banks, said, “Lydia was the perfect recipient as she shares my mom’s love of photography, sports, community involvement and faith.”
