Gorham has a long history of farming and agricultural tradition and, as such, has recently joined the Maine Farmland Trust. The Maine Farmland Trust is a statewide organization that protects farmland, supports farmers, and advances the future of farming. Its goal is not just to protect Maine farmland, but to revitalize Maine’s rural landscape by keeping agricultural lands working and helping farmers, and their communities, thrive.
Tom Poirier, Directory of Community Development, said, “The Maine Farmland Trust is a valuable organization to help working farms.” As Portland grows outward, the Town of Gorham would like to maintain its working farms.
The organization has four program areas: Farmland Protection, Farmland Access, Farm Viability and Public Outreach. To learn more, visit www.mainefarmlandtrust.org.
