On April 8, 28 members of the Gorham High School (GHS) Interact Club participated from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event at the University of New England.
Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries. Volunteers give of their time and effort because they believe it’s time to take action against cancer.
The Club chose to get involved in the Relay for Life to remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.
Together, as a group, the Club raised $3,125 to aid in this worthwhile cause. This amount earned the team the “Highest Earning Team” award that night. The Gorham group was also, by far, the largest and most energetic team at the event, also earning the “Most Engaged Team” award.
At the event itself, the premise is that at least one of the 28 participating Interact members was walking or running the track at all times throughout the entire 12 hour event. In between the walking and running, hours of eating, singing, dancing, card playing, and telling stories took place so that all students and adults alike enjoyed a great time together for a great cause.
The Club, school, and town is very proud of its members and this event they chose to participate in. It was truly a memorable and rewarding experience. One that these students will not soon forget.
