A group of Gorham High School (GHS) students have taken on the challenge of performing a play about being in a play. The group of actors are preparing the One Act play “Small Actors,” by Stephen Gregg, a comedy-drama described by GHS director Josie Tierney-Fife as “a love letter to theater.”
Tierney-Fife, an English teacher at GHS, chose the show due to its comedic nature, as well as the message sent by the play that emphasizes the importance of every actor in a theater.
Sophomore cast member Molly Lemont noted that she loves the show since she is “able to relate to everything that happens in the show because it is about theater.”
Fellow cast mates Emily Paruk and Quintessa Bissonnette highlight the depth of the show and the balance of humor to serious moments, as well as the positive and humorous dynamic between cast members that leave them laughing at rehearsal and makes preparation so much more exciting.
Another exciting part of the show, mentioned by Tierney-Fife, is the full production of “Romeo and Juliet” that takes place in just about two minutes during the show, and is the one thing that the cast knows you have to see to believe.
The cast will travel to Westbrook High School during the weekend of March 9 for the regional competition, with a performance on Sunday afternoon. Of the festival, junior cast member Isaac Martel stated, “It’s kind of like a family reunion, with people you’ve never met.”
The other students in the cast emphasized that the festival is so special to them because of the group dynamic, noting that any collection of theater people will have something in common, and how wonderful it is to be in a gathering of people with the same passions.
They will perform the One Act play for the community before the competition at GHS on March 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. and on March 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 students/$8 adults and will be sold at the door.
The play is family-friendly and appropriate for all ages.
