Two Boy Scouts from the Gorham High School graduating class of 2018 were awarded their Eagle Scout ranks on June 9 at the White Rock Grange. Mark McShane and Nathan Bachner went through the scouting program together as friends since they were Webelos in Pack 85, then became Boy Scouts in Troop 73 in 5th grade. They were recognized together for their hard work and diligence in attaining Scouting’s highest rank as Eagle Scout and joined a select group of 4% of all scouts who have achieved the same.
Mark E. McShane III, son of Mark and Shannon McShane Jr., earned 33 merit badges during his time in Webelos and Boy Scouts. His extra-curricular school activities included five years practicing Jukado at Greater Portland School of Jukado in Westbrook, and running cross county and indoor track for Gorham. McShane’s Eagle project entailed building two cement picnic table platforms at Shaw Park in Gorham using 8×8 wooden beams filled with crushed stone, and building new steps on the canoe storage shed at the same location. He plans to study criminal justice at SMCC this fall.
Nathan M. Bachner, son of Trey and Anne Bachner, worked with leaders and members of his troop to plan then construct six tent platforms at the Eddy Estate on Barstow Road in support of the Gorham Historical Society’s efforts to develop the property for Community outdoor use. In addition to extra-curricular activities involving theater and music, he has thoroughly enjoyed his scouting career and looks forward to continuing his service to others as a nursing major at Hartwick College in the fall.
As one of the Boy Scout leaders (and Nathan’s father), Trey Bachner said, “Along the way they had adventures both together and apart; different trails, similar journey. In the end, they got to Eagle Scout though their own hard work while supporting each other and it was really nice to see them honored at the same time.”
