The Gorham Middle School (GMS) welcomes a new assistant principal for the 2018-2019 school year to replace Susie Hanley who retired at the end of the last school year.
Tom Smith is no stranger to the Gorham Schools, having spent the last seven years teaching both third grade and fifth grade at Village Elementary School. He also has experience at the middle school level having taught both sixth and eighth grades at Bonny Eagle Middle School.
Additionally, Smith has been involved in coaching various youth sports throughout the Gorham sports scene.
Smith is a Gorham resident with two children in the Gorham schools. His wife, Amy, also teaches at Gorham High School.
A graduate of St Joseph’s College in Standish, Smith received his post-graduate training in Educational Leadership there as well.
Smith distinguished himself throughout the interview process with his strong understanding of the adolescent learner. He impressed the interview committee with his very calm demeanor and his genuine ability to make connections with students.
His new role was effective July 1, and he has been busy at GMS getting ready for the start of a great new school year.
For anyone who may not know Smith and would like to meet him in person, come to the GMS Open House on Tuesday, September 4, at 6 p.m. to meet the newest assistant principal in Gorham.
