GHS Winter Sports made headlines this season: making history, breaking records and defying the odds. All of the winter teams and athletes went on to the playoffs and podium finishes in their respective sport.
To recap, both swim teams placed in several top 3 categories and the girls team placed 2nd in the States, with the boys team winning Regionals. The Track and Field Teams had a great showing in their championship meets, including, nine athletes competing in the state Class A championships, including Ashley Connolly (4th in the 200), Ella Labrie (4th in the triple jump). The 4×200 relay team including, Emily Fadrigon, Piper Forgues, Bailey Hatch and Connolly placed 5th. On the boys side Griffin Gammon won the Class A State championship in the high jump of a height of 6’3’ and teammate Aiden Lee placed 2nd.
Luke Burns won the Class A State Wrestling Championship in the 182 pound weight class division on Feb 18. In addition to this major accomplishment, he was selected as the Outstanding Wrestler of the entire event. Burns is the first Gorham wrestling champion since 1994, when Jeremy Reynolds won the 135 division. Several Gorham wrestlers have placed in the top four in their weight class in more recent years, but no top place champion since Reynolds.
Both Boys and Girls Ice Hockey teams advanced and made history on the Girls’ side, hosting a first-ever play-off game and advancing to the Regional championship game. In addition, the girls team won the MPA’s SMAA Good Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row. The boys team fell short to Cheverus/Yarmouth in a 5-4 back/forth playoff game. The score was close through the entire match-up. Goals by Cole Allen, Andrew Gaudrewau and Emmit Smith kept it close. Jasper Crane was once again stellar in goal.
Most recently, on March 6, The Varsity Girls Basketball Team advanced to another State title game, making that five showings in the past decade. The Girls Team won back to back state championships during the 2015-16 and ‘16-17 seasons. Expect to see this team back in contention next season under the helm of Coach Berthiaume. This year’s team returned only one starter and was also plagued by injuries, yet, they still found a way to claw back to the state final match-up with impressive wins throughout the tournament. Congratulations to the Girls Varsity team on a successful season.
The Alpine Ski Team dominated all season long with strong performances by: Ballard, Stevens, Muncaski, Spear and Abby Fectueau. These athletes endured some of the toughest ski conditions in recent memory. This team did not fall short on grit and toughness and representing their school with top marks on and off the slopes.
