Gorham High School’s football program has faced many adversities this past year, from canceled competitions to drastic practice changes. Last month, however, they got some very exciting news. Sam Morrison, 5-year Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Rams, has been promoted to Head Coach.
Morrison grew up in Portland, Maine. He started playing football at age 7, then played Offensive Line for Deering Football throughout high school. He began coaching at age 19 in Virginia for EC Glass High School, then at Massabesic High School and South Portland High School. Now, he runs the In-School Suspension program at GHS and substitute teaches frequently.
Morrison will be taking over for Coach Andy Hager, who ran the football program for over 7 years; this is a big feat, but Morrison is ready. When asked about the upcoming season, he replied, “I am optimistic for a tackle football season this fall with UMaine playing currently and the way spring sports are being played in both HS and local colleges.” He went on to say that he thinks he’s in a pretty good place with his boys, and hopes that the upperclassmen can act as leaders for the younger players. Morrison wants to provide as many opportunities as possible for his athletes, and plans on creating an exciting yet productive environment for his team.
This is a dream come true for Morrison. “I knew from the first practice I went to as a coach in Virginia that I wanted to do this for a long time,” he explained. Morrison recently purchased a home in Gorham, where he lives with his wife, newborn son, and dog. Through coaching, working, and now living in Gorham, he’s realized how special this community is. “I can’t wait to get started!,” he expressed excitedly. The future for Gorham Football looks great. Good luck, Coach Mo!
