On Friday, June 9, the graduating seniors marched in their caps and gowns through each of the school buildings in the district to a chorus of celebratory cheers, wide smiles and enthusiastic high fives. This has become one of the most touching and emotional traditions of the graduation season, as the seniors retrace their steps from elementary (Great Falls, Narragansett, and Village Schools), through Gorham Middle School, and through the halls of Gorham High School, their recent educational institution. This walk is a wonderful reconnection with former teachers and an inspiration to the youngest learners who always ask, “What year am I going to march?”
This year was particularly touching for many of the students who had made connections with younger learners through the “Adopt a Classroom Program,” where many students had volunteered in classrooms reading and working with elementary students in their classrooms. These were not just the big kids who are finishing school in my town, but my friend and role model who is graduating.
