To kick off the 2018-19 school year, Student Council (SC) representatives, Gorham Athletic Boosters, and Gorham high school’s athletic department worked hard to prepare for the annual homecoming week.
The week of September 17 included spirit days, a pep rally, homecoming sports games, and the homecoming dance, as well as the school’s Unity and Diversity Day, put on by the Civil Rights team.
The Student Council organized the spirit days, pep rally, and dance, while the Gorham Athletic Boosters and the high school’s athletic department hosted the Homecoming games. The goal of the week was to bring spirit to GHS students and get everyone excited about the upcoming school year.
This year, SC decided to hold a door decorating competition for the school advisories to take part in during the week. The top four winners received a donut party, paid for by the SC. The winning advisories were Ms. Greslick’s advisory for “Most Creative,” Mr. L. Berthiaume’s for “School Spirit,” Mr. B. Flanders’ for “Appearance,” and the winner of the overall best door was Ms. Hatch’s advisory.
Spirit week continued to be a popular event, with themed days including Mainer Monday, Team Tuesday, Pajama Day on Wednesday, Decade Day on Thursday, and Class Colors on Friday, to coincide with the pep rally.
The pep rally started with the school song, sung by members of the GHS choirs, then SC president Kyren Bettencourt introduced sport team captains and club leaders. To finish up the event and spirit week, team captains took on a few teachers in a friendly game of dodgeball in front of the entire school.
The homecoming dance, held on September 22, was the final event of the week and had over 400 students in attendance. The theme this year was “Blast from the Past” and SC representatives decorated the school lobby and gym with CDs, balloons, and a black-and-white color scheme.
If the success of the week is any indication of the upcoming months, this will be a great year for GHS students.
