The Gorham High School Class of 1962 recently held their 60th class reunion on a sweltering August day at the Treworgy Homestead and Gardens on Flaggy Meadow Road in Gorham. Linda Treworgy Faatz was hostess to 37 graduates and their guests. The class graduated 100 participants (including Linda’s sister, Martha T. Harris) in June of 1962. A tight-knit group, they have been enjoying reunions ever since. Many are still native to the area, but others arrived from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, Texas and California.
One of the activities for the reunion was a scholarship auction with the proceeds going to the Martha T. Harris Gorham Times Scholarship Fund. The silent auction, featuring items made by classmates and representing their hobby or interests, was a huge success. The Class of 1962 raised one thousand dollars for the scholarship fund.
Martha T. Harris was a well-loved member of the Class of 1962. She knew practically everyone in town, was a talented photographer and a founding member of The Gorham Times. She had boundless energy, a deep knowledge of the town, and contributed photos of every single community and sporting event for over 18 years. The scholarship in her honor began after her death in 2013 and is given yearly to graduating GHS student interns who play an important role as volunteer writers and photographers for The Gorham Times newspaper during their high school years.
Megan Young, the 2022 recipient of the scholarship who wrote the front-page article of our Graduation Issue said, “The Gorham Times program and scholarship combined have done a lot for me both financially and academically through exploring my writing. I’d like to thank the Class of 1962 and the current Gorham Times Foundation for the recognition and opportunity they have given me. The Gorham Times scholarship is helping me achieve my goal of attending college to pursue secondary education and reducing the stress and worry of the financial burden.”
“The Class of 1962 is proud to be able to contribute to this worthy fund in our classmate’s honor,” said Wilma Gould Johnson, a class member who learned her own photography skills from Harris and who also contributes occasional photos (see The 3 Amigos photo on page 15 in this issue) as well as writing Gorham History articles.
“Our class (1962) was the first class to host a foreign exchange student under the American Field Service Foreign Exchange Program. The Treworgy family hosted a young lady from Brazil. Arlete Bonato was her name. GHS senior and mayor of the school, James Durgin, arrived with his date, Arlete, for the senior prom in a horse-drawn coach.
Editorial note: Congratulations to the GHS Class of 1962. In recognition of Martha Harris and all of you, the Gorham Times thanks you for your continuing support and encouragement of our student interns.
