BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Girls’ Basketball #1 Gorham v. #1 Cheverus

Third repeat trip and Sixth in Eight Seasons The best teams in the south and the north matched up on Saturday March 2nd. Both the Rams Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball teams made it to the state championship game. For the Girls it was the third straight trip to the state championship, under the helm of Coach Laughan Berthiaume. On the Boys side, this was their first trip, in over two decades, under head Coach Ryan Deschenes (Named Coach of the Year in the AA South), his first season at Gorham.

The Girls kicked off the doubleheader at 7pm. v. Cheverus. The Rams had been rolling in the tournament with big wins, against good teams. Right out of the gate, the Stags played a box and one defense on star player Ellie Gay and held her to four points in the contest. At the half the Stags led the Rams in a defensive battle 17-10. Vanessa Walker and Summer Gammon moved well on both ends of the court that night and the Rams had a few shining moments in the second half of play but couldn’t catch the Stags. Cheverus continued with their defensive plan and eventually it proved to be too much for the Rams. The Girls had a tremendous season and played with heart and hustle all the way to the end.

Boys’ Basketball #1 Gorham v. # 1 Windham

Boys team is the recipient of the MPA South Region AA Sportsmanship Award. During halftime of the Girls’ AA Championship game, the Boys team was awarded the MPA Sportsmanship Award for the AA South Region. Out of the tournament, the sportsmanship award is at the top of all honors. Congratulations to the boys for being recognized and appreciated for how the team carried themselves on and off the court all season long. The boys then took the court for the late, much anticipated game v. the Windham Eagles. In the first minutes, the Rams struggled with their shots but recovered quickly. The second quarter proved to be a new game for the Rams, with senior stand-out Gabe Michaud making great drives to the hoop and hitting several 3-pointers, as well as teammate Caden Smith being able to get in the lane. Off the bench, Sophomore, Colton Jewett gave the Rams a spark on both ends of the court. By the end of the 3rd quarter Michaud set Griffin Gammon up with a dunk and one. During the 4th quarter the Rams led by 5 with 1:40 to go; it went back and forth to the end of regulation, eventually forced into OT. Senior all-stars, Ashton Leclerc and Michaud fouled out of the game. Smith had a big 3-pointer in OT but the Rams came up on the short end of a thrilling final score of 62-58.

Both teams may have had tough losses, but it certainly did not define the season for the Rams. Gorham showed grit, determination, and superior sportsmanship. Ellie Gay on the Girls side and Ashton Leclerc on the Boys side both earned the tournament’s most valuable player award respectively. Congratulations to both teams and to all the seniors for leading the way.
