February is Black History Month and Gorham High School’s (GHS) Civil Rights Team is reminding students weekly of its importance.
According to Trisha Cherry, Civil Rights Team co-advisor, each week the team highlights historic African Americans and their key accomplishments.
One of the team members presents one of these individuals during morning announcements. This offers students knowledge and insight of African Americans who may not have been highlighted in history. This information is also posted in daily written announcements.
This year, the Civil Rights Team has partnered with ASPIRE Gorham to create a speaker series to highlight BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) professionals and their journey in all areas.
“Working on the Black History Month speaker series with the GHS Civil Rights Team has been educational and fun. We get to learn and highlight Black educators,” says Civil Rights Team member, Klarha Cajuste.
