The JMG (Jobs for Maine Graduates) program at GHS hosted its first Career & Cornhole Day on May 25. Put simply, it’s a job fair combined with a cornhole tournament.
Over 15 businesses attended the job fair to network with GHS students and offer anything from internships to summer jobs, to future career connections.
Businesses were also given the option to sponsor the cornhole tournament either by providing their company’s cornhole boards, or by purchasing a student-built cornhole board that will feature their business’s logo.
This project was student-run from start to finish in order to provide students with essential life skills.
Different classes contributed to different components of planning this event — one class was used to make the initial cold calls and emails to over 50 businesses, another class learned how to sew cornhole bags, another class learned how to cut vinyl to decorate the boards, and we even had two of our seniors volunteer to make a website database of all of the jobs that the businesses in attendance are hiring for.
A handful of the employers are hiring ages 14+, while others are only hiring 16+ or 18+.
There were prizes, live music, and food for students to enjoy the event and make meaningful connections with our community business partners. More information can be found on our website at jobfair.goghs.org.
