Girls’ Tennis
The girls’ tennis team ended its season with an astonishing 11-1 record. They secured a first round bye and will begin their playoff run on May 31 against the winner of Bangor (7) or Edward Little High School (10).
Track and Field Teams
The girls’ track and field team finished its season on May 18 by placing first (out of nine teams) in the Cumberland County meet held at South Portland. The lady Rams were led by senior Anna Slager who scored in three events: 1600, 3200 and 300 hurdles. Most notably for Slager (top right corner), however, was the fact that she broke a ten-year-old school record in the 1600.
Other top performers for the Rams were senior Hayley Bickford with a win in the 1600 racewalk, junior Evelyn Kitchen with a win in the javelin and scoring in both the long jump and triple jump. Sophomore Iris Kitchen had a win in the 800 and she ran the anchor leg in the1600 relay where the team placed 2nd.
The boys’ track team finished the season with a 6-6 record. The following boys track and field members have qualified for individual events in the Southwestern Championship:
Jason Catoggio, Senior: pole vault and javelin; Anthony Chase, Senior: 3200 meter run; Ryan Farr, Sophomore: 200 meter dash; Ryan Gendron, Freshman: high jump; Luke Gowen, Senior: 100 and 200 meter dash; Garrett Higgins, Senior: long jump and triple jump; Dylan Lamont, Junior: racewalk; Tyler Rollins, Sophomore: 100 meter dash; Wil Rossignol, Senior: 800 meter run; Simon Roussel, Junior: triple jump
The Rams will be competing in the SMAA Championship on May 26 at Thornton Academy and the Class A State Championship on June 2 in Bath.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The boys’ lacrosse team has had an up-and-down season but is ending the year on an upswing. With a recent win over rival Scarborough, Coach Clayton Jones said, “the Rams are poised to make the State Tournament and possibly seek redemption for an earlier OT loss to Massabesic.” The offense is led by juniors Jake Dupuis and Connor Dougherty, with strong support from senior Chris Tucker. Jones said, “Defensively the Rams boast one of the state’s best LSM’s in Sam Burghardt and the tandem of Joe Hepler and Guiseppe Brown in goal.”
Sophomore Ben Smith has shown great promise at the face-off X, and classmate Cole Perreault has become an indispensable defender. Coach said, “As key players return from injury, Gorham is beginning to gel and hopes to go far in the playoffs.”
