Mackenzie Holmes, a junior forward, is known as a diligent team player. She has size, she can dribble, she can shoot and she really understands the game of basketball. She is doing exactly what she did in High School but in Indiana.
One of her former classmates from Gorham High School explains, “You know someone has talent when they don’t change their game.”
She has a loyal local following and for good reason. She’s been IU’s leading scorer to name a few.
Holmes has just been named top 25 in the country. Her stats are more than impressive, and she is averaging a team-best 18.2 points per game, 8.2 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, and shooting 61% from the floor. She also became the 30th player in program history to record 1,000 points.
Being named in the top 25 in the country mid-year, she is on the list of candidates for the John R. Wooden Award. The winner will be announced following the NCAA tourney in April. Indiana is now ranked sixth in the nation. Recognized by her coaches past and present, Holmes will go down as the hardest working player.
She is currently out with a knee injury. According to the Indiana Women’s Basketball media page, Holmes underwent a successful procedure on her knee and will begin the rehab process immediately.
Her hometown fans of Gorham continue rooting for her on and off the court. Her motivation and determination without a doubt will get her back quickly.
