Field hockey seniors

FIELD HOCKEY:

Last season ended strongly after having an irregular season and no playoffs due to COVID-19. The team finished on a high note beating Windham 6-1 in their final game of the season. The Rams are led by Tri-Captains Alyvia Caruso, Sydney Connolly, and Maeve Donnelly and have 10 returning seniors.

Key athletes to watch are Alyvia Caruso (Sr), Sydney Connolly (Sr) Maddie Hatch (Sr), Maeve Donnelly (Jr.), Hannah Bickford (So), Brooke Farquhar (So).

Coach Becky Manson shared, “The team is looking to go deep into playoffs, with great leadership, speed, depth, and communication.” Key matchups for the Rams will be Scarborough, TA, Cheverus, Sanford, Massabesic, Biddeford.

FOOTBALL:

Last fall, the Gorham Football team completed a 7-7 season and are looking forward to getting back to tackle football this year. Coach Sam Morrison shared, “This season we will have 17 seniors who should make an impact all over the field.”

The Teams’ Captains are #5 Elijah Wyatt, #10 Charlie Gay, #41 Quentin Riiska, and #56 Shawn McKeage.

Coach also noted, he expects to get contributions from a range of players including Aidan Farley, Nate Corey, Landon Bickford, Kyle Skolfield, Dan McKeage, and Cody Sellick.

The Rams start the season on the road against Falmouth and Noble, and the team’s first home game will be against Marshwood. Coach Morrison emphasized, “Those are 3 key games as we hope to start strong and make a push to the playoffs in those remaining 5 games.”

GIRLS’ SOCCER:

Coach Jeanne Zarrilli shared, “Gorham Girls’ soccer has 15 seniors who have played together forever.”

Maddie Michaud will play the midfield/forward position, Brylee Bishop will play the midfield and Lexi Waterman & Erin Castonguay will anchor the backfield. Allie Myles will also split time in the back and midfield (all seniors).

Coach Zarrilli noted, “We are still working out the kinks but we should compete against the most challenging opponents who will be Falmouth, Cheverus, Scarborough, and Windham.”

Senior Boys and Girls Soccer

BOYS’ SOCCER:

Last season ended with 8 wins, 0 losses, and 2 ties during a COVID-shortened season. The season ended with a victory over defending state champion Falmouth, in penalty kicks on the final day, said Coach Nick Viola.

Returning Senior Leaders Colin Albert, Andrew Farr, Josiah Irish, Curran Bassingthwaite, Kyle Landry, Alden Dimick, Connor Callahan, Asa Farley, John Sutton, Will Perry are all key contributors to a successful season.

Coach Nick Viola said this season he expects his team to play to a standard of excellence, all the time, regardless of who they will be facing.

GIRLS’/BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY:

Last season both the Girls’ and Boys’ teams qualified for the state championship but that meet was canceled because of a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Key runners to watch on the Girls’ team are Elisabeth Loranger; junior, Rachel Cummings; sophomore, Rita Cummings; senior, Anna Nelson.

Key runners to watch on the Boys’ team are senior, Calvin Cummings; junior, Lucien Beardsley; sophomore, Cruise LaBrie.

Coach Jason Tanguay said, on the Girl’s team, “we return four runners from our top seven. This puts us in a good position to be competitive again this season. The Boys’ team has three runners from the top seven returning so they have a couple more spots to fill.”

Coach added that he is excited to see what the team can accomplish this fall as many of the runners have put in some consistent training this summer.

The big meets for the Cross Country teams include the Southern Maine Classic, Festival of Champions, and the Regional Championships in late October.

Girls Volleyball

VOLLEYBALL:

Coach Emma Tirrell said, last season ended well for Gorham volleyball. “We had a strong, winning season, but didn’t have the opportunity for playoffs.”

There are nine seniors returning this year: Ellie Perry, Ainsley Christianson, Megan Young, Sadie Dyer, Kate Dupuis, Anya Mazaris-Atkinson, Drew Baber, Isabella Morrell, Sophia Michaud. Coach Tirrell shared, “They’re all awesome.”

Players to watch are seniors Ellie Perry and Ainsley Christianson, accompanied by sophomore Amber Bretton.

Coach Tirrell emphasized, “We expect to grow underclassmen while letting upperclassmen fight for a deep playoff run. We have a good schedule of difficult opponents and are optimistic to fight for wins.” This year’s challenging opponents will be Biddeford and Scarborough.

Golf team seniors

GOLF:

The Golf Team was able to sneak in 5 “tri-matches” during the shortened season and was the only sport that was able to complete a State Championship.

Coach Scott Nevers shared, “The team played well during the championship with tough conditions but wasn’t able to walk away with the state trophy. We’re hoping all the experiences from last season will help us out in 2021.”

There are 7 Seniors competing this fall, including, Bryce Lumbert, Sam Farr, Lucas Castles, Jacob Graham, Dylan Morrell, Nicole Walker and Hunter Pelletier. Players to keep an eye on are Bryce Lumbert, Sam Farr, Quinn Dillon and Lucas Castles.

“We expect to be a really strong and deep team this year,” said Coach Scott Nevers. “We will compete in all our matches and look to build confidence and consistency for the State Championship at Natanis Golf Course.”

The toughest competition the golf team will face are Greely and Thornton Academy.
