GHS Student Intern

School sports have been very up in the air amid this pandemic, but fortunately, Gorham Middle School has it figured out. For many kids, sports are an outlet. For a couple hours after school, athletes can sweat it out and focus on something other than homework. It’s tough to be a student right now; things are very hectic. Thankfully, though, all fall sports are a go at GMS!

As of Monday, September 28, athletes were back on the courts, fields, and trails. With a little extra work, coaches and teachers were able to get kids registered and ready to go. Along with registration, each athlete needed to obtain proof of an up-to-date physical. As of right now, athletes are only permitted to practice on their designated in-school day. This keeps numbers low, but also gives everyone a chance to get involved.

Cross country, soccer, field hockey, and even tennis have been doing skills and drills plus plenty of conditioning. Even though there will not be games or meets against other schools, each team is working hard, getting active, and having fun. Similar to Gorham High School, face masks are required all throughout warmups, but not when actually playing or running. Sanitization stations are being provided, and social distancing is being maintained.

Sherry Coyne, teacher and athletic organizer at Gorham Middle School said, “Coaches are positive and ready to work!” Hopefully, with all these safety precautions and guidelines, sports will continue throughout the school year.
