The school year had just ended but there was still one more concert. Gorham High School (GHS) Chamber Singers is the highest choral group at the high school and takes part in many extra activities like caroling and the graduation ceremony. This year the group added something new to the roster – a GHS Chamber Singers Reunion Concert on June 21.
“It was great to get reacquainted with those people from my student teaching experience and it was also very exciting to see my own recent alums and reconnect,” said Mathew Murray, current GHS Choral Director.
Along with Murray, former directors Chris Peterson and Darrell Morrow each taught and directed three songs. Students and teachers from over three generations of classes combined to sing a program filled with each director’s style.
Songs included “Zombie Jamboree,” “Operator,” and “Omnia Sol.” The concert ended with a favorite classic, “Jabberwocky.” The singers all grabbed props, including a GHS mattress sale sign, to add to the exciting choreography of the song.
Murray credits a group of Chamber Singers from 1998-2001 with the organization of the concert.
“I had worked with these students during my student teaching experience and while we chatted after the concert, the idea of a reunion came up. From there, another alum started contacting people on Facebook and it just took off from there.”
Murray hopes to continue this tradition with concerts about every five years.
