President, FOBML, Staff Writer

Spring is in the air and that means the Friends of Baxter Memorial Library (FOBML) will soon be hosting their semi-annual book sale. The event will be held on Friday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the gym at the Gorham Rec Center. It will coincide with the opening of the Farmers Market. The Friends have been busy sorting books since October and promise that you will be pleased with the selection. The sale will include books, CDs, DVDs, and jigsaw puzzles. The Maine 3 Railers will add to the fun by setting up their amazing 0-gauge model train layout for kids of all ages to enjoy.

The FOBML, an all-volunteer group, provides time and financial support to the Baxter Memorial Library. They rely on membership dues and the proceeds from book sales to finance their initiatives. The group recently purchased furniture to create a cozy space in the Youth Services area for our teens, a climbing/sliding structure for small children, and supplies for arts and crafts as well as for nurturing Frankie, the bearded dragon who has captured the curiosity and hearts of Baxter’s patrons.

The Teen center was attractively redecorated using funds from the Friends of Baxter Library’s annual Book Sale.

As part of the efforts to promote the library as a cultural center, the Friends have also hosted free public readings by such authors as Paul Doiron, Monica Wood, Matt Cost, Philip C. Baker, and Chris Davis.

After the book sale, the Friends will be gearing up to assist with the annual Spring into Summer event in June which is a thank you to the community for helping our library continue to flourish. Attendees will be able to get a close-up look at fire trucks, police cruisers, and construction vehicles while enjoying hot dogs, snow cones, and popcorn prepared by town officials. At this time, library members of all ages will be able to sign up for the summer reading programs.

The group is always looking for new members to help staff, an author event, giving an hour of time to a book sale, or just help support the library through your annual membership.
