A recent post on the Gorham Public Works Department Facebook page said, “Thank you for the hockey stick, pot, pan, cutting board and nightstand (no drawers, that’s a bummer) but they do not belong at the silver bullets, aka the recycling containers at Public Works, and neither do bags of trash or dryers…”
The post continued, “Not only does the crew have to take time out of their scheduled duties to clean this area up but it also hinders the contractor hauling the containers who now has to take extra time to move items out of the way, and it’s just wrong. Please do the right thing.”
The Facebook message contained a collection of cute emojis like smiles, frowns, happy faces and other symbols, along with some humorous language, but it’s still a serious message hoping to reach those who still mistake the silver bullet area on the Public Works grounds as the town dump. It is not.

The silver bullets provide a place to recycle certain items, and they are clearly marked. To find out how to responsibly dispose of other unwanted items check out Ecomaine’s Recyclopedia at www.ecomaine.org.
The Department’s message concluded with, “Before just tossing something, you could see if there is a need in the com- munity for the item you no longer want or need. Anyone can also drop off gently used, in working condition, items at most Goodwill or Salvation Army locations.” Facilities for drop-off are:
Riverside Recycling
910 Riverside Street, Portland, 207-797-6200
Casella Transfer Station
594 County Road, Westbrook, 207-805-3511
