An exciting project was completed at Narragansett in Jacqueline Durant-Harthorne’s classroom. In Kindergarten, the students study the four seasons. They had been reading about each season since the start of school. For winter, their studies were linked to how the weather changes to snow using their Scholastic Let’s Read Magazine to study snowflakes. Then they looked more closely at snowflakes using a Google search and learned about symmetry.

The next step was to draw snowflakes and discuss how the 3D printer is able to print them so in came the math term 3D. Visiting the computer lab at Narragansett, they learned how the 3D printer would use software that would turn 2D drawings into a 3D shape.

Joanne Gauley, the technology integrator assisted with the digital tools. It was a great through-line unit that integrated so many skills.

Mrs. Durant-Harthorne is grateful to Narragansett School Principal Erin Epler for always supporting integrated learning and excitement for learning, and even being willing to pitch in to lend a helping hand.
